Natural Light Portraits

Saturday 19 July
Provo Canyon - 10am - 2 Hours
Bryce Giesmann
This Natural Light Portrait Meetup will explore how to create stunning portraits using natural light and outdoor backgrounds. You'll learn how to identify and manipulate flattering light in less controlled environments, outside of a studio setting.

We'll also focus on collaborating with your subject to capture their personality and style, covering posing techniques and how to set your subject at ease. Technical skills such as accurate focusing and metering for skin tones will also be discussed.

Note: We encourage you to bring a friend or family member to be your model. Practicing with someone familiar will enhance your learning experience.

Street Photography Meetup

Saturday 02 August
Downtown Provo - 10am - 2 Hours
Bryce Giesmann
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

"Bryce Giesmann is a retired full-time Art Educator and Yearbook Advisor who has transitioned into a dedicated artist career after 20 years in education. Originally from Waverly, Iowa, Bryce holds a BA in Fine Arts with a Minor in Education from Luther College in Decorah. His early artistic journey was marked by a focus on oil landscapes, reflecting a deep connection to semi-abstract painting techniques.

Bryce's artistic practice took a significant turn when he moved to Wyoming and began grappling with clinical depression. To navigate this challenging period, he turned to photography, a medium that swiftly evolved from a hobby into a profound obsession. This new creative direction led him to pursue an MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design, which he completed in 2019.

This photo was taken during a bucket list trip to drive the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park. All the research I did stated the absolute best place to camp was at the White Crack camp site. This turned out to be true. Though there were no clouds to for the sunset I had hoped for, the colors of the sun setting over the red rock were amazing. To stand at the edge of the cliff and overlooking the beauty of the Monument Basin leaves one in awe of the power of nature and how small our

I met young Miles at Ellis Square while he was doing some rather gymnastic break dancing. Luckily, for me, I was using my Nikon Z7 which allowed me to switch from raw to jpeg giving me 9 frames per second on motor drive. I was shooting aperture preferred and used f/8 the resulting shutter speed was 1/1600 of a second. 9fps sounds fast but I only had 6 nicely composed shots out of 120 exposures.

I had spent the better part of the day moving silently through the edges of the chase looking to photograph deer. It was one of those days that seemed perfect on paper: overcast skies that softened the light, barely a breath of wind, and a camera battery at full charge. But nature is nothing if not humbling. The deer remained ghost-like, unseen despite hours of quiet patience and soft steps.By late afternoon my hopes had dimmed so I began the slow walk back to the car. The path wound through
